Cricket Pre-Season at Great Oakley

At Great Oakley, cricket is more than a game, it’s the heartbeat of the village. With multiple teams, senior 1sts, 2nds, 3rds, a women’s team, and a thriving junior section, the club is alive with energy even before the first match of the season.

Training doesn’t stop when the summer ends. Throughout autumn and winter, teams have been keeping skills sharp and spirits high by using local sports halls, ensuring players of all ages stay connected and ready for the season ahead. Pre-season traditionally kicks off in February and March with indoor nets, groundwork days, and preparations at the Lewin Road ground. Volunteers and players work together, sharing tips, laughs, and a fair few stories about past seasons, all while making sure the pitches are ready for the official start in April.

As the weather improves, outdoor training takes centre stage. Senior and women’s teams now train on Wednesday evenings from 6pm (weather permitting), while the youth section takes to the field on Fridays. These sessions are about more than drills and technique, they’re about building confidence, teamwork, and that unmistakable Great Oakley spirit.

But the cricket club is about more than batting averages or match results. It’s a community hub where friendships are forged and stories are swapped. After a practice or a match, the licensed bar buzzes with chatter, neighbours catching up, kids comparing scores, and a few seasoned players swapping memories over a pint. It’s these moments, just as much as the cricket itself, that make the club special.

Cricket at Great Oakley is more than a season of matches; it’s a place to belong, laugh, and celebrate community, where the game and the people who play it are equally at the heart of village life.
