Between the market towns of Melton Mowbray and Grantham is situated The Saltby Estate, which forms part of the overall Great Oakley Group.

There is an in- hand farming operation using the very latest technologies, headed by arable manager, Christopher Bates and a dairy unit which is let on a farm business tenancy.

The Estate is undulating with a wide variety of hedgerows, a site of Special Scientific Interest and the latest addition a Diamond Wood, as Saltby was chosen by The Woodland Trust as a site for a diamond wood, each wood celebrating a year of the reign of HM Queen.

Open Farm Sunday

Open Farm Sunday is a fantastic opportunity for everyone, young and old to enjoy the living, vibrant countryside. Take time to listen to the birds, soak up the scenery, experience the smells of the farmyard and really get in touch with the land that feeds us. Discover at first hand what it means to be a farmer and taste the produce. So come and feed your senses on Open Farm Sunday.

Each event will be unique with its own activities – based around the host farm’s own individual story. Activities during the day may include a farm walk, nature trail, tractor & trailer rides, pond dipping, activities for kids, mini farmers market or picnics.

Health and Safety

Each year Andrew Green of Greens of Haddington visits Saltby and Great Oakley to undertake a thorough assessment and review of the Group’s Health and Safety. Shortly after his visit any procedures which need to be implements are put in place.

In addition to the above, staff members are encouraged to go on health and safety courses and are provided throughout their time within the Group with the appropriate health and safety equipment.

Sustainable Agriculture and Recycling

For several years now, all the fertiliser bags, cardboard boxes and other recyclable waste generated by the Great Oakley Group of farms have been recycled by a company called Agricycle.

All engine and lubrication oils are also taken away and reprocessed for further use by Witham Oils.
